Version number in the help about <> version on website

Post by dfhtextpipe »

There is still a mismatch regarding version numbers for updates.

The most recent two headings in Detailed Changes log on your site are:

What's New in TextPipe v8.1.5 - July 2, 2008
What's New in TextPipe v8.1.4 - June 24, 2008

See http://www.datamystic.com/textpipe/whatsnew.html

I downloaded and installed the previous update on June 24, but my notified download history says, "You downloaded v8.1.3 on 24 Jun 2008."
This agrees with what is displayed in Help About menu. TextPipe Standard v8.1.3
This is in disparity with the above changes log.

This is all very confusing.

It would also help if the actual setup filenames included the incremental version digit , rather than just having textpipestandard_full81.exe

Thanks David,

Release notes are issued in local (Australian) time, whereas download time are recorded in server (US) time.

You must have downloaded v8.1.3 prior to the 8.1.4 release.

We plan to eventually have the full version number in the filename.

Dear Simon,

Your explanation makes little sense, in that the event that prompted my action to download version 8.1.4 was the 'check for updates' feature of TextPipe! I also know that, since I had saved the version 8.1.3 download in a different directory at an earlier date.

Hi David,

June 24th is a 24 time period. It's quite possible that you downloaded the 8.1.3 version earlier on the 24th, and the 8.1.4 release was updated later.

Also, dates for the version check facility do not necessarily get updated at precisely the same time as the download, they can be 30 minutes apart.

This probably explains the discrepancy. Is this a big concern for you?

Simon,

I think the response about time zone differences and other clock talk is a "red herring".

I would never have downloaded a new update unless I had been informed by the program's "check for updates" feature that there was a new one ready to download. This has nothing to do with time zones!

I would not be at all surprised if the version numbers are still out of synch, several days after the most recent update was announced.

I first reported this problem in a similar topic a few weeks ago.
It seems to me that you have failed to really understand it, or to properly investigate it.

Hi David,

Which question do you want me to address?
"You downloaded v8.1.3 on 24 Jun 2008."
despite
What's New in TextPipe v8.1.4 - June 24, 2008
Easy - you downloaded on June 24 prior to the 8.1.4 update being released.

The version check in our software uses a Build date - so if we did a later build on the same day (e.g. to make a minor change or installer improvement) then you would find that a 8.1.3 version that you downloaded might ask you to upgrade again (to a version that is still 8.1.3 that does NOT ask you to upgrade).

if this doesn't explain what you're seeing please let me know. We're always working to improve our systems, but the software itself comes first.

Simon,

"Curioser and curioser!".

Being prompted by the program, I just downloaded the latest update of TextPipe Standard.
I then uninstalled the previous version. Rebooted, then installed the new download.

The shortcut in Quicklaunch Toolbar was created with the name "TextPipe Standard 8.1.6"
The shortcut in the Start Menu is also called "TextPipe Standard 8.1.6".
The other versioned shortcut in the Start Menu folder is called "What's New in 8.1.6"

"What's New" and "Help About" both declare the version as 8.1.7
The "What's New" text file states unequivocally that the latest update is 8.1.7 dated 19 July 2008.

So the version mismatch issue is still unresolved, and it really is a software issue, not merely a website issue!

Hi David,

This is actually a separate issue - the version number in the installer was not updated. Doing this now - so you'll see a new prompt to update (there are no other differences).

Hi Simon,

Contrary to your prediction, it never prompted me for a further update.
