Methinks the contextual help for the Remove columns filter should explain that specifying anything to do with columns could have unpredictable results if the file to be processed is Unicode containing multibyte characters.
Likewise for the Add Column of text filter and the Restrict to column range filter.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

The text Note - this filter is designed for ANSI or Unicode UTF-8 data - it will not handle UTF-16 data. has been added to those filters and others dealing with Delimited data or Columns.
