Webpipe crashes

Have been using WP on a public internet-based database, pulling down file records using the url sequence generator, and for this site Webpipe crashes from time to time. I have experimented by reducing the number of simultaneous connections and the speed of downloads, and it seems to reduce the frequency of crashes, but am wondering if there is some other lever that I should be pulling ? I have also defragged the hard drive which is where the downloaded files are being dumped (up to 100,000 in each directory - I am using XP). Interested to know what are the likely causes of Webpipe crashing and how I can mitigate. Thanks
